Mapping MUNAL — Live Video Mapping
Client: ARSCITE + Escuela Superior de Música + MUNAL · Year: 2017 · Role: Lead Motion Artist / Interactivity
Tools: Cinema 4D · Resolume Arena · Processing · After Effects · Producer: Héctor Barbone
On International Museum Day 2017, the iconic Patio de los Leones of the National Museum of Art (MUNAL) in Mexico City's Historic Center became a canvas for live video mapping synchronized with a percussion ensemble from the Superior School of Music. Part of the May Month of Museums program, the event was presented by INBA, SHCP, and Capital Social CDMX.
The visual system was built to react in real time to the live percussion. Processing scripts developed in collaboration with programmer Elizabeth (@_elibby_) captured the rhythm and dynamics of each performance, driving generative animations that breathed alongside every beat. The base visuals featured marine animal animations rendered in Cinema 4D and composited in After Effects, then mapped onto the architecture of the colonial courtyard using Resolume Arena.
Designing for architectural projection means thinking in three dimensions from the start — every visual element had to account for the depth, columns, and irregular surfaces of the Patio de los Leones, turning the building itself into an active part of the composition.
